Despite playing a large stretch of the game one man down, Carolina RailHawks goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald made five saves and shut out the New York Cosmos, earning North American Soccer League Player of the Week recognition for Week 4.

“The recognition and shutout really goes to the entire team,” Fitzgerald said. “It was a total team effort and the guys in front of me were fantastic all night long.  I think it says a lot about the character of this team to defend the final 20 minutes plus stoppage time with eight players and preserve the shutout.”

One of the key saves for the Baltimore, Md., native came in the 77th minute, when the Cosmos had their best opportunity to equalize as Norwegian forward Mads Stokkelien had an open chance in front of goal. Fitzgerald robbed him with a point-blank save.

Fitzgerald began his time playing with the RailHawks U-23’s before signing with the RailHawks professional team in July 2011.

Fitzgerald played college soccer at Wake Forest University and is among the university’s all-time goalkeeper leaders in minutes played, goals against average, save percentage and saves.  He was named Second-Team All-ACC in 2010, was a two-time All-ACC Academic selection, and was a member of Wake Forest’s NCAA Championship team in 2007 along with current RailHawks’ teammate Zack Schilawski.
